Gender: Male
Age: 16 (mentally 19, due to three years in Luceti)
Time Period: Post KH3D Secret Ending
Wing Color: Black with white tips.
History: Wiki
Personality: Riku's come a long way since he first left Destiny Islands, since his quarrels with darkness and foes such as Ansem and the Organization. At one point he was an arrogant, rash teenager who was willing to give up everything just to visit the outside world. He fell into darkness, and though he eventually came back to his senses, it took quite some time for him to fully come to terms with his darkness and himself. He made strides in Castle Oblivion by choosing to walk the road to dawn, but even then, the darkness still lingered and haunted him. By 358/2 Days, he'd gone from confident and hopeful to sullen and withdrawn. Quiet and thoughtful. His priorities were on saving Sora, and he was willing to throw his whole identity away and disappear just to make sure his friend woke up.
By the time KH2 ended, Riku started showing signs of his old self. Though it took a little persuading from his friends, he did open up a little and fought fiercely alongside Sora and the others to defeat Xemnas. Yet, even at the start of KH3D, he remained doubtful of his status as Keyblade wielder. After making so many mistakes, did he really have what it takes to be a Keyblade Master? His decision to take the Mark of Mastery exam was an attempt to test himself-- to see if he could really rise from the ashes.
Yet, even at the start of the game, he wasn't completely angsty and withdrawn. Far from it, actually. While a bit awkward around Shiki and distrusting of Joshua at first, he helped them out when they needed it most. Throughout the game, he smiles, cracks jokes, and goes out of his way to help the residents of the Sleeping worlds.
He encourages Quasimodo to follow his heart rather than become its prisoner. He helps Sam Flynn rescue Quorra once she's been taken by Clu. In every world, he doesn't just seek out the sleeping Keyholes-- he gets to know the worlds' residents and lends a hand wherever he can. While in the first game, he was merely fixated on himself and his friends, Riku's since expanded his scope. He's become humble. Responsible, and driven to protect those he cherishes at all costs. In many ways, Sora's rubbed off on him, and he's not afraid to admit it. Several times, he mentions how Sora can bring out the best in everyone, so it's very possible that his actions reflect what he's seen of his friend.
Granted, he knows he's not Sora and that it's easy enough to spout out sappy advice-- following it is another story. Early on in the game, he still shows some hesitance. His encounters with Young Xehanort and Ansem don't help matters, either, as each of them taunts Riku about his darkness. However, by the end of the game, it's clear that he finally knows what it means to be a Keyblade wielder. He stands up to Ansem without fear, determined to make him a part of his light. Best of all? He completely triumphs. This is a key point in Riku's development, the resolution of a conflict that's followed him for more than a year.
So, what does this mean overall? Well, that cool, collected exterior still remains a key part of Riku's character. While Sora gets excited by all the new surroundings, Riku approaches his test and journey with a cautious eye. In conversations, he keeps a laid back attitude. Occasionally makes jabs at his friends and asks questions when necessary, but he's not afraid of letting others carry the conversation. That is, unless they're his enemies, in which case he's more than willing to interject and call them out.
In fact, he does just that to Xehanort in Symphony of Sorcery when he gets all 'chatty'. This just proves that his trademark snark remains. He pokes fun at Sora quite a few times, makes bad puns and sarcastic remarks around some of his foes; it's just balanced out by his humbler demeanor.
Rather than gloat about his skills, he accepts his duties as Keybearer because it's right, not because he's the strongest guy around. Chances are, he really doesn't think that of himself, given how surprised he was when he got declared Keyblade Master. He's still confident to a degree and very driven, as he's always been, but not to a point where it's rude or obnoxious. On the contrary, Riku's way more polite and respectful now. He bows in Yen Sid's presence, doesn't butt in on Sam and Flynn's father son issues, and apologizes to Phoebus when he has to 'rely on a kid.'
Of course, Riku isn't perfect. While he's no longer reckless to dangerous levels, there are times where he gets blindsided when it comes to his friends and throws himself into danger. Given how he literally abandoned his identity in the past in order to help them, this just goes to show the intense lengths he'll go for the people he cherishes. While he's not about to side with the villains or beat himself up like he used to, getting to his friends is the easiest way to get to him.
Likewise, while he's definitely grown and openly accepts that one should trust and follow their heart, he still does have a little bit of a rough time taking his own advice-- something he outright mentions in one cutscene. I think, to some degree, he still has a few insecurities. It's not something that holds him back, but worth noting, since it's in stark contrast to Sora's confidence.
His occasional awkwardness may also be a bit off putting-- Shiki even calls him out on it in their first meeting. It goes to show that there are certain things, like flirting, that are a bit outside his comfort zone. This won't apply quite as much in Luceti, since he's got about six months of dating Ino under his belt, but even then, he's not the smoothest cassanova. If anything, he'd just continue to try and keep his cool exterior under those circumstances. Key word: try.
Strengths:
Physical;
Where do I even begin?
I've mentioned in past apps that Riku's very physically fit. He's strong, agile, and has years of swordplay under his belt, even if the bulk of it involved sparring with wooden swords. His journeys throughout the worlds have pushed him. Forced him to adapt to real conflict. Darkness gave him great strength, most of which he still retains to this day.
In fact, Xehanort points out in a cutscene that Riku is immune to darkness. He's locked it inside his heart and can use it without losing himself. Many of his exclusive abilities relate directly to this power. He can still launch dark flames, warp and perform rapid slashes. He can even project a barrier to shield himself from dangerous attacks. Dark corridors may be a thing of the past, but even without portals, darkness alone provides him with an added edge in combat.
Of course, there's much more in Riku's arsenal than that. After all, he's a Keyblade wielder-- a Master, at that. So, what kinda fancy quirks does a Keyblade have?
First and foremost, it's a weapon he can summon at will. It'll open any lock, provides him with a number of magic attacks, and can change form depending on the Keychains he equips it with. Each chain has its ups and down. Some are designed for critical hits, others for magic. It just goes to show how versatile it is. And, despite being a Key, this weapon hits hard.
As for magic, Riku's obtained a great number of skills. He can utilize fire, ice, electricity, zero gravity, and many other skills. He can put enemies to sleep, confuse them, poison them, freeze them and slow them down. Elemental skills can be combined with physical attacks, allowing him to utilize moves such as Flame Pinwheel or Thunder Dash. Vanish allows him to turn invisible, Time Bomb turns enemies into... well, time bombs. Oh, and he can create giant, exploding balloons that home in on enemies, too.
Basically? There's a lot he can do with his magic, and it'd take ages to cover it all.
There's more to his skills than just that, though. Thanks to his adventures in the realm of sleep, Riku's picked up an ability called Flowmotion. This allows him to fling himself at buildings, off of poles, and other obstacles in order to launch himself at foes and perform a variety of attacks from spinning slashes to slams that create shockwaves along the ground. He can wall jump, dash through the air, and get from place to place much quicker than the average Joe.
Other skills he's picked up include dodge roll and its variation-- dark roll, which is a quicker and more efficient version of the move. He can double jump as well, giving him an added boost when dealing with foes. And Riku's regular jump is already pretty ridiculous. Now he can get twice as much height. Yikes!
I'll end this section by talking about Dream Eaters, creatures that are the KH equivalent of Pokémon. Throughout his journey, Riku's created and befriended a number of Spirits, benevolent Dream Eaters that feed on nightmares. Each one possesses their own unique abilities, and he can temporarily absorb them go gain new skills.
I'll be giving him the following Dream Eater...
Komory Bat: A small, dark-affiliated dream eater. It largely attacks with soundwaves that can induce confusion and also possesses a vampiric drain move. This little guy gives Riku the link style Darkest Fears, which allows him to attack with dark claws.
One last ability Riku possesses is the ability to dive into people's hearts and dreams. While this probably won't have much of a practical application in Luceti, he was able to save Sora's heart from darkness once by doing so. I imagine that he could do this with others if necessary, but I doubt he'll be doing this a whole lot.
Mental/Emotional;
Since I already covered the bulk of this in the personality section, I'll just sum things up in brief:
Riku is a kind and compassionate friend with a great desire to protect the things that matter. In the past, he's gone to great lengths to do so, throwing himself into darkness and abandoning his identity. In KH3D, he risks his own safety by diving into Sora's heart to rescue him, showing the lengths he'll go to save a pal.
He's generally very resourceful and driven. He approaches situations generally with a cool demeanor and knows when to improvise. For example, he blasted his way out of the light cycle arena once he'd had enough. He also has a tendency to plan ahead, as shown in previous titles like KH1, where he'd longed to leave the islands for years and was always on top of raft preparations. If he's got a goal, he'll see it through to the end.
While others may judge people based on appearances, Riku knows better. He showed no fear when facing Quasi and his grotesque looks, and one of his best friends is a cartoon mouse. He's also willing to give advice when people need it, even if he doesn't always follow said advice to a T. Still, he understands the importance of following one's heart now and shares this knowledge when necessary.
His will's even stronger than before, and he's no longer shackled to his fear of the darkness. Riku's not only accepted it, but made it a part of his light. Taunting him over his past won't phase him near as much as it used to, and manipulation? Good luck with that. After all his screw-ups, Riku's come a long way, and he doesn't plan on falling back on old habits.
Weaknesses:
Physical
I basically wrote a whole novel about Riku's strengths, so what about his weaknesses? Well, in spite of his power and speed, he does take some pretty heavy damage. While he can heal lickity split with Curaga, if a foe can get in enough powerful hits to knock him down, it wouldn't be hard to overwhelm him. Plus, as he's only human, he's still got his limits. Push him hard enough, and he'll run out of steam. Even if he heals his wounds, he can't keep going forever, and when he does run short on breath, that's the opportune moment to strike.
Not to mention that he can't abuse his spells and techniques again and again. After using moves like, say, Meteor, he has to wait and recharge. Get him to abuse enough of his skills, and he's forced to play the waiting game for a few seconds. Or you can catch him off guard. Attack him when he's not looking, fire a ton of moves all at once before he can dodge or use dark barrier...
Really, there are ways to beat Riku. It just takes some solid fire power to do it.
As for his Dream Eater...
Komory Bat: Small, light weight, and weak to light. Because of its fragility, it's really easy to knock this guy around, provided you can get past its obnoxious attacks.
Mental/Emotional
While Riku tries hard to follow his heart, he's no Sora. He still has lingering insecurities, and while he tries not to let them get to him, there are definitely times when he second guesses his own strengths. He's so used to seeing Sora as the hero that being a Master himself is strange and new to him. While I fully expect him to work hard to fulfill his title, it'll definitely take some getting used to.
His occasionally blunt and snappy remarks might be a little off-turning to some. He does have a habit of poking fun at the people he cares about. Those who aren't used to his sense of humor, however, might find it a little harsh or mildly tactless.
He's a very goal-oriented person, and there have been times where he got so fixated on accomplishing his goals that he got blindsided by everything else. In 3D, he makes a significant effort to branch out and help others, but it's still worth noting.
When it comes to his friends, Riku has been very single-minded in the past, having cast himself into darkness and taken on Ansem's appearance. He wouldn't make such reckless moves now, but when his friends are in danger, he tends to focus on them to a point where he can and does get caught up in dangerous situations, such as the way he rushed straight at him in the final world, even when Xehanort, Ansem, and Xemnas lingered close by.
They're easily is biggest weakness. The people he'd do anything for. If there's one way to bring him down, it's to go after them, especially Sora, who'd already become Xehanort's target during his last adventure.

Third Person:
A year's worth of new memories hit him like a ton of bricks. Memories of his struggles with darkness, of how he lost his identity just to save his friend. Of how his two best friends knocked some sense into him and dragged him back into the light. He woke up remembering that and so much more. Journeys into dreams, battles against nightmares. A stream of encounters with Xehanort all leading up to the final showdown where Sora nearly lost himself.
He'd saved his best friend. Become a Keyblade Master... All of it was so weird to imagine. He'd spent the past few years in Luceti clinging to his identity as his own individual, free from his destiny, yet he'd gone through it in the end. He'd lived through the good times and the bad and changed over that year...
"But it still feels like a dream."
He sighed, leaning against the mast of his old raft, the Black Pearl. It was one of his first accomplishments in Luceti, thrown together with a little help from Sora and Kairi with the intent to sail down the river and see where it took them. But, of course, the constant storms and experiments and who-knows-what-else always got in the way. He'd lost track of how many times he had to go back and patch the old raft up.
But even after all this time, it endured, just as he had. For all his screw-ups, both in Luceti and out, he was still in one piece, physically and emotionally. And while it seemed strange to think that he'd been gone for a few hours and lived through so much more, maybe he shouldn't have been so surprised. Luceti was full of oddities and its own little ironies.
Even if he had a lot of memories to sort out, he'd get through it somehow. Compared to past experiences, it was just one little bump in the road.
